#3 Alum Update: Joel Weber

(Fishing for Striped Bass off Nantucket)
Writing a blog for my high school classmates is kind of intense. Suddenly I face a daunting question: What have I contributed to society since 1999? Err...next question! Here's the greatly abbreviated version. I attended the University of Oregon and graduated from the Honors College with a degree in magazine journalism in 2003. I was still living in Eugene later that summer when a large tree branch 60 feet above my parking spot snapped, fell, and proceeded to smash the shit out of my car. Figuring that was some kind of omen, I packed my bags and moved to the one place in the country where I wouldn't need a car and could potentially get a job at a national magazine: New York City. That was about five years ago. I got my start at Men's Journal and moved to Best Life, which is published by Men's Health, last year. My job title is Senior Associate Editor. I write stories, assign stories, edit stories, make television and radio appearances about stories ... and try to spread joy and promote creativity by firing a Nerf pistol and its rubber-tipped missiles at my colleagues.

It's kind of amazing how many people from our class I've managed to keep in touch with. I'd say I've connected with about 50 people since graduation ... and somehow that relatively small number feels oddly impressive as it represents a tenth of our class. There must have been something in the water, because we've done well. We're lawyers, teachers, mothers, fathers, entrepreneurs, businessmen and women, dentists, publicists, scholars, artists, contractors, electricians ... the list goes on and on. More importantly, we're good eggs.
The stories that will get shared at next summer's reunion are going to be priceless, and the only way you're going to hear them is to be there. That probably sounds vaguely similar to a pitch during a PBS fund raiser, but I'm being sincere. I look forward to seeing you there!

#2 Alum Update: Jamie Call-Schipaanboord

I figure since I've been asking for updates, I better post one of my own. I went to Montana State my freshman year, transferred to Ricks College in Idaho my sophomore year, and met Jake Schipaanboord on the first day of school. We started dating in the fall of '00 and got married June of '01. We've been married 7 years now and are still going strong. Jake and I finished our undergrad degrees at the University of Utah in '03 (me- BS in psychology, Jake- BA in English.) Jake graduated from the U. of Utah's law school in '06 and we moved to Oregon to look for a job. He accepted an offer in Klamath Falls (4 1/2 hours south of Portland) and we were there for 7 months. Then he was offered his dream job, practicing environmental law at a great firm in Salt Lake. We couldn't pass it up. We moved back to Utah in May '07, bought a house in Nov. '07, and that basically brings us to the present. We have three beautiful kids: Ben (5 1/2), Emma (3), and Josh (1). I'm a stay-at-home mom and love every wonderful (and challenging) minute of it. I'm planning on getting my masters in social work once my youngest is in school, but for now, I'm home with the kiddos.

As for the pictures, the first is a family picture we had taken on Labor Day. The second was taken in June when my son, Ben, broke his arm. The last picture is of me and my youngest, Josh, visiting a Buddhist temple in Malaysia in April.

So, I've received a lot of positive feedback about the reunion and I think we will have a great turnout. The reunion committee is currently in the process of tracking people down. We hope to get e-mail addresses from everyone so please shoot us an e-mail so we can get your contact info recorded: glencoe99reunion@gmail.com

10 Year Reunion- Saturday, August 1st, 2009

It's official. Our 10-year reunion will be held on Saturday, August 1st, 2009 at the McMenamins Cornelius Pass Roadhouse. I will be setting up a Paypal account and a regular account with US Bank for reunion funds so you will have the option to pay online or send a check. Once we decide on the menu for the night, the committee will figure out the cost (probably around $35 to $45/person.) Any extra funds will go towards our 20-year. The committee has a lot of great ideas for the night. Joel Weber will be helping put together a digital slide show of our class and we are hoping to get updated pictures of anyone who would like to be in it. If we don't get very many pictures, some of us have thought about pulling them from your MySpace and Facebook pages. If anyone has a problem with that, let me know. Please pass this info along to anyone who graduated with us. We hope to have a great turn-out and with this already set 14 months in advance, I'm sure all of you can clear your calendar for that day. We plan to start getting RSVPs going a year from now and will collect payments at that time. Until then please send me your life updates with pictures so I can post them on the blog. We would love to hear what you have been up to since high school.

Cornelius Pass RoadHouse

It looks like we will be having our 10-year at the McMenamins Cornelius Pass RoadHouse, most likely on August 1st, 2009. We have been communicating with the RoadHouse events coordinator and the committee has decided this would be a great venue for our reunion. We will be using outdoor space which means the weather will play a huge factor that night. That is why we decided to go with a date in August, instead of June (rain is less likely to be a problem.) Once we get the reservation set (hopefully in the next couple weeks) we will post an update. So keep checking back for more details.

PS If you have never been to the RoadHouse, feel free to peruse their website:

http://www.mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=13&id=162

It looks like a neat place and it has history tied to our school (named for the Imbrie family, Frank Imbrie was an amazing history teacher at Glencoe and retired, I believe, after our sophomore year.)

We plan on setting up more reunion webpages to get the word out (facebook, myspace, etc.), so keep checking back for more info.

Also, we want this site to be for you, our fellow graduates. We would love to hear what you've been up to the past 9 years. Please send pics, life updates, etc. to jamieschip@yahoo.com and we will make sure to post them to this site.
